Leonardo.ai

AI art & game asset creation

Image/Video Application

What it's used for

Leonardo.ai is an AI image generation platform built for game developers, digital artists, and creative professionals who need fine-grained control over their outputs. Unlike simpler AI art tools, Leonardo offers a suite of specialized models, control features, and training capabilities that let artists direct the AI with precision.

  • Fine-tuned models — access community and platform models specialized for characters, environments, concept art, anime, photorealism, and more
  • Custom model training — train your own models on reference images to generate consistent characters, objects, or styles
  • Realtime Canvas — sketch ideas and see them transformed into detailed images in real time
  • Texture generation — create tileable textures and materials for 3D modeling and game development
  • Image guidance — use ControlNet, depth maps, and edge detection for precise compositional control
  • Pose control — guide character poses using reference images for consistent results

Game developers use Leonardo for generating character portraits, environment concepts, item icons, and texture assets. Digital artists appreciate the model variety and control features that let them steer generation toward their creative vision. The community gallery provides inspiration and shareable prompts.

Leonardo.ai positions itself between consumer tools like Midjourney and professional pipelines like ComfyUI — offering more control than the former while being far more accessible than the latter.

Getting started

  1. Sign up for free at leonardo.ai with email or Google account.
  2. Pricing:
    • Free: 150 tokens/day — enough for 10-30 images depending on settings
    • Apprentice ($10/mo): 8,500 tokens/mo, access to all models, priority generation
    • Artisan ($24/mo): 25,000 tokens/mo, train custom models, API access
    • Maestro ($48/mo): 60,000 tokens/mo, multiple concurrent generations, maximum features
  3. Generate images:
    • Choose a model from the dropdown (Leonardo Phoenix, Kino XL, Anime XL, etc.)
    • Enter your prompt and adjust settings: guidance scale, dimensions, number of images
    • Toggle Alchemy for enhanced quality (uses more tokens)
    • Click Generate
  4. Try the Realtime Canvas: Click Canvas in the sidebar, sketch a rough drawing, and watch it transform into a detailed image in real time as you draw.
  5. For custom models: Go to Training > New Dataset, upload 8-15 reference images, and train. Use the resulting model to generate consistent outputs in your trained style.
Tip: Leonardo's model selection is crucial for good results. Use Leonardo Phoenix for general-purpose quality, Kino XL for cinematic photorealism, and DreamShaper for fantasy/illustration. Browse the community feed to find prompts and models that match your desired style.
