What it's used for

Adobe Firefly is Adobe's family of generative AI models, integrated directly into the Creative Cloud apps that professional designers already use daily. Its critical differentiator is commercial safety — Firefly is trained exclusively on licensed content (Adobe Stock, public domain, and openly licensed works), so generated assets can be used in commercial projects without intellectual property risk.

  • Generative Fill (Photoshop) — select an area and describe what to add, remove, or replace with natural language
  • Generative Expand (Photoshop) — extend images beyond their original boundaries with AI-generated content
  • Text-to-image — generate images from prompts at firefly.adobe.com or within Creative Cloud apps
  • Text Effects — apply stunning stylistic effects to text and typography
  • Generative Recolor (Illustrator) — recolor vector artwork instantly with text descriptions
  • Structure & Style Reference — use reference images to guide the composition and visual style of generated outputs

Professional designers, creative agencies, and enterprise marketing teams choose Firefly because it integrates into the tools they already use (Photoshop, Illustrator, Express) and carries Adobe's IP indemnification — Adobe will defend you legally if a Firefly output is challenged on copyright grounds.

Firefly is embedded throughout the Adobe Creative Cloud ecosystem including Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe Express, and Premiere Pro.

Getting started

  1. For the web experience: Visit firefly.adobe.com and sign in with a free Adobe account. You get limited monthly generative credits for text-to-image, text effects, and generative fill in the browser.
  2. For the full experience in desktop apps: A Creative Cloud subscription is required:
    • Photoshop ($22.99/mo) — Generative Fill, Generative Expand, Remove Tool AI
    • Illustrator ($22.99/mo) — Generative Recolor, Text to Pattern
    • Creative Cloud All Apps ($59.99/mo) — Everything across all Adobe apps
    • All plans include monthly generative credits that replenish (25-1,000+ depending on plan)
  3. In Photoshop: Select an area with any selection tool, then click Generative Fill in the contextual toolbar. Type a prompt or leave empty to let AI fill based on context.
  4. Additional credits can be purchased separately if you exceed your monthly allocation.
Tip: For Generative Fill in Photoshop, making a slightly larger selection than what you want to change gives the AI more room to blend naturally. Leave the prompt empty for object removal — the AI fills based on surrounding context, which often produces the most seamless results.
