GitHub Copilot

AI pair programmer in VS Code

Coding Application

What it's used for

GitHub Copilot is the original AI pair programmer, developed by GitHub and powered by OpenAI models. Integrated directly into popular editors, it provides real-time code suggestions as you type — from single-line completions to entire function bodies — making it the most widely adopted AI coding tool among professional developers.

  • Code completions — real-time inline suggestions that predict your next lines of code based on context, comments, and function signatures
  • Chat assistance — ask Copilot to explain code, fix bugs, generate tests, and write documentation in a conversational sidebar
  • Slash commands — use /fix, /tests, /explain, and /doc directly in the editor for quick actions
  • Multi-file awareness — understands imports, types, and patterns across your project for more relevant suggestions
  • Pull request summaries — automatically generate PR descriptions and review summaries on GitHub.com

Millions of developers use GitHub Copilot daily across every major programming language. It is especially effective for writing boilerplate, implementing standard patterns, generating test cases, and quickly prototyping ideas. Studies show it can improve developer productivity by up to 55% on repetitive tasks.

GitHub Copilot works in VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, Neovim, and Visual Studio, plus directly on GitHub.com and in the GitHub Mobile app.

Getting started

  1. Go to github.com/features/copilot and choose a plan:
    • Copilot Free: Limited completions and chat (available to all GitHub users)
    • Copilot Pro — $10/mo: Unlimited completions, chat, and access to multiple models
    • Copilot Business — $19/user/mo: Organization-wide management, policy controls, audit logs
    • Copilot Enterprise — $39/user/mo: Fine-tuned to your codebase, PR summaries, Bing-powered documentation search
  2. Free for students and popular open-source maintainers — verify your status at education.github.com.
  3. Install the extension in your editor:
    • VS Code: Search for “GitHub Copilot” in the Extensions marketplace
    • JetBrains: Install from the Plugins marketplace
    • Neovim: Use the github/copilot.vim plugin
  4. Sign in with your GitHub account when prompted. Suggestions begin appearing automatically as you type.
Tip: Write a clear comment describing what you want before starting a function — Copilot uses comments as strong hints. Press Ctrl+Enter to see multiple alternative suggestions in a panel.
